Shrimp Boat

On July 23, 1989, 200 shrimp boats blockaded the Houston Ship channel in protest of the federal regulation requiring shrimpers to use Turtle Excluder Devices. Similar blockades occurred in Beaumont, Corpus Christi, Louisiana, and Florida. The shrimpers complained that the TEDS were too costly, too dangerous to pull, not effective in freeing turtles and that they freed the shrimp as well. Some complained they lost 10-30% of their catch.
