All documentaries must tell a story. Be interesting. There are 6 stages to a great documentary storytelling; Exposition, Rising Action, Conflict, Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution. Watch this excellent short doc**entary and see if you can pick out the following:Exposition: What information are you giving at the beginning of the film?Rising Action: What event in the rising action drew you into the film?Conflict: What types of conflicts are presented?Climax:The most excited part of the film?Falling Action: In what way is the action of this part of the film different from the first part?Resolution: How do you feel at the end of the film? Did the film make it's point?

  • This was informative from a 4th grade student's perspective.  At the beginning of his film he explained that he had some concerns about school lunches and if they were truly in line with the required standards.  I was drawn in as he began to video the actual lunches and show the discrepancies between what was being served vs. what was being posted.  The conflicts posted included (but are not limited to) the items on the menu not showing up on the lunch, the continued use of Styrofoam plates, and the presentation of the lunch itself. I am caught in a quandary with the most excited part of the film...was it the items that he was studying (fresh veggies, a twinkie and the school fries) or being caught by the lunchroom monitor taking pics.

The difference in the observational study is that he is actually following a scientific process vs.  just recording data through his documentary.  I believe he certainly made his point and I also like that he did reflect back and state that all of the lunches were not bad.  It was also a little disheartening to see the percentages related to lunch menus posted and lunches served.
